HEADACHES
Some estimates suggest that a whopping 25% of the population has a headache right now. A comprehensive U.S. study reported that 10 million Americans suffer from moderate to severe disability from various forms of headaches.

Because headaches are so common, some people think that getting a headache is just another normal part of life! The truth is that headaches are a sign that something is wrong. Aspirin and medications may generally cover up these warning signs, but do not specifically correct the underlying structural causes.
A frequent and often overlooked cause of these headaches is the malfunction of the spinal column. Fixations of the bones of the neck and upper back cause the spine to become locked up, or stuck. This restriction in movement affects the muscles of the neck and upper back. When this happens to the muscles and bones of the neck and upper back, sensitive nerves and blood vessels to the head can be negatively affected. This type of irritation can produce a throbbing headache known as a muscle tension headache. Some studies have demonstrated that muscle tension headaches have also been known to trigger migraine headaches.
All headaches are compounded by the stress and tension of everyday life. Many headaches are also sponsored by allergies, sinus congestion, food sensitivities, toxic chemical fumes, and alcohol. Another important consideration is the eye strain associated with driving, reading, and working on the computer.
Every now and then, we will pinpoint the cause of the problem to a different area of the body, such as the jaw (TMJ Syndrome) or even as far away as the pelvis or sacrum. It all ties in together and your chiropractor may look at your digestion and check your liver function. Constipation can lead to the build-up of toxins in the blood and cause sinus headaches. We don't question the possibility that "anything can cause anything." We just fix what we find, and then let the body respond in the manner that it was naturally designed to.
Chiropractors are experts in the care of all of the joints, bones, nerves, muscles, and connective tissue that make up the majority of the human body. Specific corrections to the spine safely removes undesired tension off of the nerves and muscles of the spine and often alleviates the throbbing pain associated with many headache cases.
Massage and trigger point therapy increases circulation to the muscles of the neck, head, and jaw. Many times, this is enough to relieve a headache, but chiropractic spinal corrections are usually necessary for more longer-lasting or permanent relief.
Simple lifestyle changes and relaxation techniques, such as deep-breathing exercises, can also be demonstrated to help the patient prevent future problems in this area. Nutritional supplements that support muscle relaxation and the ability to handle stress are often times helpful.
Nobody should have to live with headaches. They are too close to home. Together, with the wide arsenal of treatment options that we offer, we can make a difference.
