| RESEARCH & DEVELOPEMENT
Dr. Royal Lee believed in the value of scientifically researched, whole food nutritional supplements. He field tested his unique nutritional supplements and endorsed and supported clinical evaluations of them by others. Input from health care professionals enabled him to enhance and perfect the health benefits of Standard Process products.
Building for the Future
Standard Process is dedicated to continuing Dr. Lee's Research and Development practices by applying 21st century technology and expertise to his founding principles. We combine the evaluation of current scientific research and Dr. Lee's insights and teachings with applied clinical research in our Research & Development department.
Our Research & Development department consists of skilled, professionally trained, degreed scientists who work to provide a solid scientific basis for the safe and effective use of high-quality supplements, herbs, and other natural products for health care professionals.
Types of Research
Our scientists' goal is to gain a detailed understanding of the underlying biochemical components, physiological activities, and population health applications of whole food supplements. Our scientists meet this goal by performing basic, clinical, and outcomes research.
Basic Research
Basic research is utilized to identify and quantify key chemical markers within whole food ingredients and analyze them throughout the manufacturing process. Using plants grown in experimental test plots at our farm, our scientists determine which plant varieties will survive and grow in our climate. This helps us evaluate the potency of individual nutrients in our raw materials. The basic research that is performed in our Research and Development department assures us that the nutritional integrity and maximum synergistic capacity of the final product is maintained.
Clinical Research
In addition to basic research, Standard Process also focuses on clinical research. This research is primarily conducted through collaborative relationships with major conventional and complementary research and education institutions.
Graduate Medical Education Program & Outcomes Research
In fall of 2002, Standard Process became the first nutritional products company to sponsor a graduate medical education program in the dietary supplement industry with our naturopathic clinical residency program. In this program, qualified naturopathic graduates from accredited naturopathic medical schools rotate through conventional and alternative medical facilities in southeastern Wisconsin. The residents define, develop, and implement research protocols to answer important questions about the efficacy of natural products in the prevention and treatment of disease.
The development of the graduate medical education program allows us to utilize outcomes research to evaluate the effectiveness of Standard Process products in large populations of patients. One example of the use of outcomes research is the Standard Process Health and Wellness Outcomes Study. This study evaluates the impact of Standard Process' Corporate Wellness Program on the health and productivity of employee volunteers. Employee volunteers are examined by the naturopathic doctors, participate in health screenings, receive lifestyle and fitness counseling, and commit to a protocol of Standard Process supplements. In the future, we hope to extend our graduate medical education program to include other health care professionals.
The Standard Process Research and Development department works to provide health care professionals with a solid scientific basis for the safe and effective use of high-quality whole foods, herbs, and other natural products so that we can meet our mission of providing the safest, most effective, highest quality products.
